On our first full day in the Lake District we aimed towards Scafell Pike. To get to one of Scafell Pikes starting routes we drove to the Wasdale National Trust parking where we paid about £9 for full day parking and then began our walk exiting from the back of the car park.
At the car park there were public toilets and a small visitor information which is manned by one person. We were also able to get a tea and coffee if we gave a small donation.
The weather that day was poor however despite the clouds and rain our climb was very enjoyable and the scenery still beautiful, seeing the clouds and mountains blending together makes for a very different view compared to Japans views.
Eventually our path went up high enough for us to become surrounded in clouds, the wind picked up and our clothes began to get a bit wetter.
Higher still and the rain began to fall. After about 2.5 hours walking we reached the very top of Scafell. Apparently its shorter than it used to be originally…some climber knocked the top of the stones at the mountain peak making it less tall.
At the very top there was nothing but rain and wind. I dug into my backpack to fetch a packet of mini cheddars and we had a little nibble. I offered some to a few other climbers who were also at the top and not long after that we decided to make a decent back down Scafell. It’s only cold when you’re not moving! We were fine once we started using our legs again to descend the mountian.
The journey down was much easier, only 2 hours.
We passed many climbers who were making their way up the path. I think they timed it wrong, the rain at this point was heavy and I wouldn’t recommend being up there in high winds.
All in all, our experience was a good climb, very nice day despite the weather. Would recommend it as a place to visit.
